Sam Phillips is a songwriter and a singer from Los Angeles, California. She was nominated for a Grammy award in 1994, but she did not win. In fact, she didn’t even make it to the ceremony because she had the wrong directions and ended up at a Ukrainian dance hall where they had a party and a red carpet, but no prizes. The Grammy folks kindly included her in 2008’s festivities by sending her a certificate of participation in the album of the year for writing the song “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us” recorded by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The certificate was kind of beat up by the postal service, but proved to be legitimate.

After 7 albums and 7 years of scoring the Gilmore Girls television show, Sam began a year of music in 2009 called The Long Play. She wrote, recorded and released 5 EPs and 1 full-length album over the course of the next year while documenting the process through essays, video, audio, artwork, as well as any other certified reality-escaping techniques. In the spring of 2011 she issued Solid State, a public cd release comprising 13 of the best songs from her subscription service. Phillips described her next album, Pretty Time Bomb, (later renamed Push Any Button), as being “a nostalgic sort of dream of being a pop star in the 60s and early 70s. It’s a sweet kind of album and I don’t know where it came from. I don’t know what compelled me to make it. It’s probably a bad idea, but every time I listen to what I’ve done, it makes me really happy. So I figure, that must mean something and I should go ahead and put it out there.”

In 2012, it was announced that she would be reunited with Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino by scoring music for the TV show, Bunheads. Phillips released Push Any Button in August of 2013 and is currently scoring the music for the TV series, Murder in the First for TNT (to debut June 2014). You can hear a magnificent cover of Phillips’ “Where is Love Now” on the new album, A Dotted Line, by Grammy-winning band Nickel Creek.
