Vince Gill, a long time member of Rosanne Cash‘s band and a backing vocalist on her revolutionary 1981 smash album Seven Year Ache, brought the house down at the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony this past October when he performed this week’s top tune in honor of Rosanne’s induction to the Hall.
It was a fittingly poignant moment in an evening that celebrated Rosanne’s long and successful career as a songwriter and artist and one where she joins the Hall as the only father/daughter pairing in this company of illustrious songwriters.

Seven Year Ache is the masterpiece album that has been said to have paved the way for Garth Brooks, Shania Train, Shawn Colvin and then some. In Rolling Stone‘s 50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own, Cash “conceived her niche as post-pub-rock and borderline New Wave, at least in the sense of Tom Petty and Steve Forbert, whose material she interprets”. The album was produced by then-husband Rodney Crowell and the title track was Rosanne’s first #1 Country single, crossing over to a Top 25 Pop tune. The album spawned two more #1 Country singles including another self-penned stunner, “Blue Moon With Heartache” and Leroy Preston’s “My Baby Thinks He’s a Train”. This week’s tune earned Cash an ACM Awards nomination for Single Record of the Year, and helped earn her a nod for Album of the Year. Seven Year Ache is both a true classic and a trail blazer all wrapped in one.
