Elvis Costello – Song With Rose

(click song title above to listen)

Between last breaths and first regrets
The days dragged on like cigarettes
In the distance martyrs and martinets
Dally, dancing with the empty silhouettes of threats

Over the years Rosanne Cash has written a few songs with her longtime pal Elvis Costello, and today we’re proud to bring you the aptly titled “Song With Rose” – a centerpiece from Costello’s 2008 release Momufuku. It’s not the only time the two worked together – in fact they actually cut a couple of tracks with mutual pal Kris Kristofferson including “April 5th” from the companion album to Costello’s 2015 biography, Unfaithful Music.

If you ask us, these two share a lyrical DNA and are natural collaborators, and any pairing of the duo is always welcome. Joining Costello on the track are his band the Impostors (Pete Thomas, Steve Nieve and Davey Faragher), along with guests Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Johnathan Rice, “Farmer” Dave Scher, and Jonathan Wilson.

Dianne Reeves – I’m In Love Again

(click song title above to listen)

Yesterday we lost one of the all-time great record execs and classiest A&R men in the biz when, Bruce Lundvall, the former CEO of Blue Note Records and a legendary figure in jazz, passed away in New Jersey at the age of 79. Bruce was famous for his passion for music and for treating musicians and songwriters with the utmost respect during a long and prosperous career. Bruce started out at Columbia Records beginning in 1960, with a move to the Elektra/Musician label in 1982, to ultimately reviving Blue Note Records in 1984 (until stepping down as president in 2010). Bruce worked closely with the label’s earlier roster including legends like Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard and signed new artists ranging from Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, and John Scofield, to Norah Jones, Us3, Terrence Blanchard, and Al Green.

One day in 2008, we cold called Bruce at his office at Blue Note Records and although he was the president of the label, he answered his own phone. We asked him if it would be alright to come over and play him some songs Fiona Apple, Patty Griffin and Madeleine Peyroux had just recorded for a Cy Coleman tribute album and could we get his opinion. For the rest of the afternoon we were in his office listening to tracks, listening to his stories of Cy, the producers and artists he knew through these songs and the projects he was working on and he wondered if he could he send Dianne Reeves over a song or two to consider for her new album. It was an afternoon we’ll never forget.

So, we’re thinking of Bruce and we offer up this week’s top tune in his honor. It’s one of our favorite Cy Coleman ballads with lyrics by Peggy Lee and Bill Schluger and comes from the great vocalist, Dianne Reeves and her 2008 album, When You Know. Thank you sir, you will be dearly missed!
