Sam Phillips – Reflecting Light

(click song title above to listen)

Just about this time eleven years ago, Sam Phillips released the second of what would become a trio of excellent albums for Nonesuch Records, A Boot And A Shoe. It’s an album that was described by the Los Angeles Times as delivering “deft, powerful strokes” and Billboard proclaimed it: “A disc of graceful beauty”.

We could not have agreed more! You may also recognize its’ sixth track, the striking “Reflecting Light” from the 2009 film and soundtrack to, Crazy Heart. The film earned Jeff Bridges an Academy Award for Best Actor and is one of our all-time faves. Sam sings and plays guitar, T Bone Burnett plays bass, it’s Patrick Warren on piano and pump organ and the great Section Quartet (Eric Gorfain/violin, Daphne Chen/violin, Richard Dodd/cello, Leah Katz/viola) on strings.

Not that I’ve worn out, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon’s never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

Kendra Morris – All Night

I heard you were here
And then you disappeared
Last night
When they killed the light
Words we didn’t say
Our eyes that took us down to more
Then we were ready for
You came up behind me, grabbed my wrists in the dark
And said ‘don’t look at what you can’t see’
Now all night, all night
I’ve been looking for you all night

Imagine our excitement when Notable’s latest signings (with our partners at Wax Poetics) Kendra Morris and Jeremy Page headed into the studio to reinterpret Sam Phillips’ “All Night”…

The duo tackled the tune – keeping Sam’s lyrics out front and adding their own signature vibe to the track – transforming the song into a sultry classic R&B groove.

Kendra and Jeremy are currently in the studio finishing Kendra’s debut album of all new material which will be released by Wax Poetics Records in Spring 2012.

Puchase Kendra’s “All Night” on iTunes, Amazon, or wherever fine digital music is sold.

Here’s a fan-made YouTube video of Sam’s original version (which appears on 2004′s A Boot and a Shoe).
