Last week, the Kennedy Center and the Grammy Museum announced that Robert Plant & Alison Krauss would appear in celebration of “Lead Belly at 125: A Tribute to an American Songster”. The concert will honor the musical legacy of Huddie William Ledbetter and will take place on April 25th at the Kennedy Center. More performers include Buddy Miller, Lucinda Williams, and Valerie June.
The pairing reminded us of Plant & Krauss’s brilliant 2007 album, Raising Sand which won Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards (plus all four other categories it was nominated for) and went on to sell over a million copies in the U.S. alone. The songs were hand-picked by producer T Bone Burnett including this week’s Top Tune, a stunning version of “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us” written by our very own Sam Phillips.
The tune was recorded by Phillips herself a year later on her eleventh studio album, 2008′s Don’t Do Anything on Nonesuch Records. It was inspired by Sister Rosetta Tharpe as Sam explains:
“I was using her (Tharpe) to talk about the things that we can’t see that happen all around us – the inspiration, the good things that happen to us all the time, and where do those things from? I think through music and art is how we get to ecstatic experiences. There are other ways too, but I think for us the familiar ways are through music and art”.
We couldn’t agree more!
