Oscar Peterson – Witchcraft

This week’s Top Tune was recorded on May 18th, 1959 in Paris as a loving salute from one master interpreter of great melodies to another. “For years I have been an ardent admirer of Frank Sinatra. I’ve been thrilled by his singing and I’ve respected the taste that goes with his singing.” from the original liner notes as told by Oscar Peterson.

“As a musician I’ve further admired his choice of tunes and as a fan I’ve recognized that certain tunes are forever, at least in my mind, inextricably linked with Sinatra, both by usage and interpretation and by that special magic that is his alone”.

Absolutely, “Witchcraft”, written by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh would become one of Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits, spending sixteen straight weeks in the Top 20 and at the first Grammy Awards was nominated for six. The song has gone on to be recorded hundreds of times by the likes of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald and was recently included as one of the highlights in the new ASCAP Centennial Songbook (Hal Leonard) celebrating the history of ASCAP and celebrating its representation of some of the greatest songwriters of all time. We hope you enjoy this timeless version by the great The Oscar Peterson Trio, with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.
