Bettye LaVette – On The Surface

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s Top Tune is legendary soul belter Bettye LaVette’s inspired cover of Rosanne Cash’s “On the Surface”. After years of recording and performing, LaVette returned to the mainstream public eye by signing with the always adventurous Anti- Records and releasing I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise, an album of covers that dominated critics’ “Best Of” lists in 2005. Her interpretation of this track is exhilarating, as she wraps her unmistakable vocals around Rosanne’s words and melody to transform the song into a classic Bettye Levette standard.

Lovingly produced by Joe Henry, I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise remains a blueprint for a true modern soul classic.

Bettye LaVette – How Am I Different

This week’s Top Tune was written by Aimee Mann and Jon Brion and originally appeared on Mann’s third studio album, 2000′s Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo. Aimee initially released the album on her website sans record company. It would eventually go on to achieve a worldwide release and success aided by the soundtrack album to the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia, with which the album shares material.

If you happened to catch last Sunday’s episode of Girls (HBO), you heard the original version of this little gem. This week we offer up a version by the great Bettye LaVette who cut the song on her 2005 album, I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise on Anti Records. Watch a great live performance of the song by Aimee Mann.
