Tony Bennett – When In Rome

(click song title above to listen)

Today we wish the very incredible Tony Bennett a very happy 90th Birthday! Bennett is one of the greatest jazz singers and interpreters of American popular song of all time.

This week’s tune was written in 1964 by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh and was recorded during sessions over a 4 day period for 1975′s brilliant Tony Bennett/Bill Evans album. A dream project of Tony’s, it combined his affection for jazz, songs of the Broadway masters and of the Great American Songbook with only the masterful accompaniment of legendary pianist Bill Evans.

“I never sing a song that’s badly written. I don’t like to cheat the audience,”, says Tony. “I always try to do the best job I can for them because they deserve it.”

Salute Mr. Bennett, no better man!

Peggy Lee – When In Rome (I Do As The Romans Do)

Peggy Lee’s voluminous recorded legacy at Capitol Records was only in mid-session when she hit in 1964 with two albums, I’m In Love Again & In The Name of Love. As with many of her albums of the 1960′s, these two featured many tunes written by Peggy’s good pal Cy Coleman and this week’s Top Tune is a fine example. Barbra Streisand will also enjoy a hit with it that same year.

A few years later, Tony Bennett on a split with Columbia Records and eager to balance the demands of commerciality, teamed up with the great Bill Evans (see: Miles Davis – Kind of Blue) on a new beautiful arrangement for Fantasy Records. Please enjoy this great little bio & live performance by Bill and Tony on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show from 1975 HERE.

Frank Sinatra – Witchcraft

Frank Sinatra’s recording of Witchcraft (Coleman/Leigh) received 6 Grammy Award nominations at the first ever Grammy Awards in 1957 for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Vocal Performance (male), Best Arrangement (Nelson Riddle), and Best Album Cover.

Sinatra would re-record the song in 1963 for his Reprise collection, Sinatra’s Sinatra and again in 1993 as a duet with Anita Baker.

The tune has gone on to become a pop and jazz standard, recorded by the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and Bill Evans just to name a few.
