Chico Mann returns to Cali in concert this coming Saturday, September 26, 2015 for Oakland Music Fest 2015. Launched in 2013 as a celebration of all things Oakland, OMF is an independent showcase featuring local and international musical talent as well as local eateries, breweries and small craft distillers. Founded by a group of friends and Oakland locals, the Festival aims to foster and support both the local music, art community and the diverse food & spirit craftsmen that collectively give Oakland its distinct flavor. This week’s Top Tune comes from a young Oakland-based star on the rise, the mighty Kehlani and her new mixtape, You Should Be Here. Released last week on iTunes, Billboard calls it “2015′s First Great R&B Album”. The song debuted at #1 on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artist Chart and the album is the current reigning #1 set on the iTunes R&B Chart.
Kehlani’s version coincides with the 15th anniversary of the cut that inspired it, Musiq Soulchild‘s “Just Friends (Sunny)” from his 2000 hit debut album, Aijuswanaseing. Influenced by Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and India Arie, it’s no wonder Kehlani gravitated toward Musiq Soulchild’s soulful take on Bobby Hebb‘s “Sunny” for her new single. The ambitious, self-assured new album follows up her excellent 2014 mixtape Cloud 19 and displays explosive vocal ability. Only 20 years old, Kehlani turns many intense personal life experiences into soulful & universally hopeful messages. Read more about Kehlani in Fader Magazine HERE.
Our favorite tracks include “The Letter” and the killer ballad “Bright”, but it’s “Down For You” with a strong guest vocal from BJ The Chicago Kid that seals the deal.
Musiq Soulchild’s “Just Friends (Sunny)” is everywhere it seems, his great cut also informs Wale‘s new track “The Need to Know” feat. SZA from his #1 album, The Album About Nothing out now on Atlantic Records. Listen to Wale’s excellent take HERE. Last but not least, you can let Prince show you a thing or two about how to play a proper guitar solo to the song w/Musiq Soulchild HERE.
