“Broadway’s smartest musical of the 90s…musicals this tasty don’t come along very often”
- San Francisco Chronicle
“There are Plenty of musicals with clever lyrics. Some offer clever books. A handful even manage clever melodies. But City of Angels, which won six Tonys in 1990, is the rarity that has all three”.
- New York Times
City of Angels now on stage through September 17 – San Francisco Playhouse. Music by Cy Coleman, Lyrics by David Zippel, Book by Larry Gelbart.

“If there are angels up there, please answer my prayers and ensure this transfers.” – Daily Telegraph
“Extraordinarily sophisticated musical theatre…Rourke pulls it off in breathtaking style”. – The Arts Desk
“This cast is something else…Hadley Fraser is great as the self loathing Stine; Tam Mutu is so good as noble screw-up Stone that you wanna give him his own detective show.” – Time Out London
The London revival of City of Angels at Donmar Warehouse has taken off like gangbusters! The original production of the musical comedy by Tony winners Larry Gelbart (book) Cy Coleman (music), and David Zippel (lyrics) was described by Jack Kroll of Newsweek as “a miracle on Broadway – an American musical, with American jazz rhythms, American wisecracks, and an original American script”.
The show is a loving & funny tribute to Film Noir and the glitzy Hollywood studio system of the 1940s, none of which is lost on Donmar’s musical director, Josie Rourke. You can read a great piece about Josie’s love for ‘that old noir magic’ HERE.
This week’s Top Tune comes from 1993′s Original London Cast Recording, sung by David Schofield as LAPD Lt. Munoz. Munoz has never forgiven his former-partner Stone for “getting away” with murder…
