Tony Bennett – The Colors of My Life

During his lengthy career writing pop standards and Tony-award winning musicals, Cy Coleman, the recording artist, had released many great jazz trio and vocal recordings from the late 1950s through the 1980s. He would even own his own jazz club for a short time in New York City called The Playroom.

In 2002, Cy returned to his roots and recorded one final album for Sony entitled, It Started With a Dream. The album’s special guest featured Tony Bennett singing The Colors of My Life (originally written for the 1980 Tony-award winning Broadway musical, Barnum). This great performance is a fitting testament to Tony & Cy’s long friendship & mutual success and just maybe to Mr. Bennett’s life-long passion as a painter as well.

In 2006 famed director David Lynch included an instrumental version of the song in the film and soundtrack to Inland Empire that starred Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeremy Irons, and Diane Ladd. The Gaurdian rated the film one of the “10 most underrated movies of the decade”. The soundtrack was mostly composed and performed by Lynch himself and also included Beck and Nina Simone. The soundtrack version showcases The Colors of My Life’s timeless melody, you can give it a listen HERE.
