Sam Phillips – Edge of the World

This week’s Top Tune is one of our all-time favorite songs of Sam’s live set and comes from her ninth studio album and first for Nonesuch Records, 2001′s Fan Dance. Produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring another round of sterling musicianship by the likes of Van Dyke Parks, Marc Ribot, Jim Keltner, and Gillian Welch, the stripped-down album was praised as creating a quietly riveting tension and one of the best of her career.

If you’re in L.A. this weekend, don’t miss Sam sharing a stage and a band in a rare co-headlining gig with Joe Henry at Largo At The Coronet. Saturday February 21. Showtimes are 8p and 10:30p, for tickets and info click HERE.

“Anyone who’s ever seen Sam Phillips live can’t help but be struck by what a world of ideas and emotions she communicates with what seems so little: a raised eyebrow, a focused glance, a sly smile, an ever-so-subtle turn of her head. Above all, there’s her green eyes wide open, as she appears to expand them to their physical limit to take in everyone and everything within their panoramic view.” – Randall Roberts, Los Angeles Times.
