Skating Polly – Perfume For Now

(click song title above to listen)

Channelling their inner rock’n'roll to extreme, last year Kelli Mayo of Skating Polly did a ‘Dave Grohl’ after tearing her knee ligament on stage. Though that seems to just be the beginning, with their new album dropping, it won’t be long before you’re thrown into a beer splattered mosh pit. Sisters always have each other’s backs. – NME.

Those are prophetic words from NME as Mayo and Peyton Bighorse put the finishing touches on their new album The Big Fit coming March 25th via Chap Stereo (April 8th UK). The album is a scorcher and was produced by Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips) and mixed by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr.) & Jim Vollentine (Spoon, White Denim).

“I wrote ‘Perfume For Now‘ hoping to come up with an L7 anthem type chrous and noisy basitar solo,” explains Kelli Mayo to Upset Magazine. “It’s about trusting someone with all your heart and then realizing they’re despicable and not worthy of your admiration.”

We don’t know about Kelli’s heart, but happily her knee has fully heeled and the duo will be in fine form in a city near you. You can catch them March 23rst at the Treefort Music Fest in Boise, ID, Apr 23rst at the Norman Music Fest in Norman, OK and a summer tour with Deerhoof just for starters. Don’t miss their excellent new video for the tune directed by Nickolas Rossi (dir. of acclaimed Elliott Smith doc Heaven Adores You) HERE!

Jon Brion – Knock Yourself Out

Today’s Top Tune is a song most will know from David O. Russell’s “existential comedy” I ♥ Huckabees. Huckabees was, of course, scored by Jon Brion – and he contributed this song to soundtrack of the film, which featured a incredible ensemble cast including Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Naomi Watts and Mark Walhberg.

In addition to I ♥ Huckabees, Jon’s film scoring credits include Hard Eight, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Break-Up, Synecdoche, New York, Step Brothers, Glago’s Guest, The Other Guys, The Future, and two films scheduled for release this year: the 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller adventure ParaNorman, and Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up “sequel” This Is Forty.

On the “pop” side of his career, Jon has worked as a writer and/or producer for the diverse likes of Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Aimee Mann, Katy Perry, Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Spoon, Best Coast, Of Montreal, Dido, and Keane, to name but a few. His semi-regular gigs at his LA home Largo at the Coronet remain consistent sellouts – his next performance is set for March 30. If you live in or are visiting the LA area, come down and see why these shows have become the stuff of legend.

Be sure to check out the awesome video for “Knock Yourself Out” featuring Jon with two of Huckabees‘ stars, Jason Schwartzman and Mark Wahlberg, by clicking HERE or on the video screen grab, below.

Jon Brion – I Believe She’s Lying

We are thrilled to start the new year by announcing that Jon Brion has joined Notable Music for exclusive publishing administrative agreement in the US. We are so proud to have him join our musical family of great songwriters.

As a producer and/or co-writer, Jon has worked with everyone from Kanye West to Fiona Apple, Spoon to Elliott Smith, Rufus Wainwright to Best Coast, to name but a few. Brion’s numerous film scores – from his Grammy nominated work on such modern classics as Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to current projects such as the forthcoming ParaNorman – have only grown his recognition as one of the most respected contemporary composers.

His semi-regular shows at LA’s famed Largo at the Coronet have literally become the stuff of legend – as the Largo site itself says “you never know who might drop down the chimney for some unannounced fun.” The too-numerous-to-list parade of Jon’s special guests over the years is a virtual who’s who of musicians and singers, from Neil Finn to Nels Cline, Sam Phillips to Brad Mehldau, Robyn Hitchcock to Aimee Mann… you get the idea.

Jon’s lone solo release, Meaningless, remains a critical favorite, and is regularly cited as an influential record for many artists and songwriters. It is from that album that we present “I Believe She’s Lying” – a classic slice of intricate pop from the brain Jon Brion. The tune has already been covered by a varied group, including Rhett Miller of the Old 97′s, genre-bending R&B wunderkind Spree Wilson, and a cappella group Reverse Osmosis.

Check out this clip of Jon performing “I Believe She’s Lying,” live at Largo.
