Bing Crosby – Witchcraft

(click song title above to listen)

Bing Crosby exerted an important influence on the development of the modern recording industry. While performing extensively for the troops in WWII, Crosby had witnessed and became fascinated with tape recording. The Crosby Research Foundation would come to have many patents. In 1947, he invested $50,000 in the Ampex company, which built North America’s first commercial reel-to-reel tape recorder. He left NBC to work for ABC because NBC was not interested in recording at the time. Crosby then became the first performer to pre-record his radio shows and along with Frank Sinatra, was one of the principal backers behind the famous United Western Recorders recording complex in Los Angeles.

In keeping with the Sinatra Centennial Celebration and to mark the beginning of summer, this week’s Top Tune comes from the swingin’ concept album, Bing Sings The Sinatra Songbook, a collection of songs connected with Frank culled from Bing’s personal archives. Bing Crosby’s organically different approach on many of these Sinatra classics is on particular display with “Witchcraft” which he recorded in a shuffling ballpark-like style on April 3, 1958 in Palm Springs, California for his weekly Ford Road Show radio broadcast.

Bing’s recording of the Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh standard comes one year after Frank’s debut recording which earned six Grammy nominations and is most recently heard in the hit film and gold-selling soundtrack to Fifty Shades of Grey. Salute!
