Sam Phillips – Lying

(click song title above to listen)

It was this week back in 2011 when Sam Phillips gifted us with a collection of songs from her stunning year-long subscription series The Long Play. Capping off a particularly fertile period of creativity to her fans, Solid State highlighted 13 of 42 songs she released over the course of five EPs and a full-length album.

This week’s tune is one of our faves of the collection, a stripped down version of “Lying” Sam originally recorded for her 1991 album, Cruel Inventions (and featured Elvis Costello on guitar!).

On Solid State “Phillips makes every word count…doling out images with precision. She sings about compromises, frailty, coping mechanisms, and tiny flaws that define a life. Phillips sounds like she’s rejuvenated – and never better.” – Greg Kot – Chicago Tribune.
