“Rosanne Cash is a national treasure. Her ability to illuminate the human condition in song and story is breathtaking and she’s done it for years. She is a deeply compassionate, people’s poet” – Cory Chisel to Rolling Stone Magazine.
We could not have summed it up better! Fittingly, Rosanne Cash will be presented with Smithsonian Magazine‘s prestigious 2014 American Ingenuity Award on Oct 16th in Washington D.C. by T Bone Burnett. The Smithsonian American Ingenuity Awards annually honors 10 of the most inspired pioneers in America at the forefront of science, technology, art and education.
Cash, an outspoken advocate of artist’s rights and fair compensation for songwriters, passionately testified on behalf of creators and musicians on Capitol Hill this summer before the House Judiciary Committee on music licensing. You can read her excellent letter to the committee HERE.
This week’s Top Tune is “Night School” from Rosanne’s recent & highly acclaimed Blue Note Records debut, The River & the Thread. It is a song that Elvis Costello described to Rolling Stone in its “Guest List” column as one that “comes into my head when I’m least expecting it”. One of his favorite new songs of the year. It’s melody and string arrangement married to Cash’s lyrics by co-writer and producer John Leventhal, so beautifully done and the performance a huge stand out for us of her live show.
Rosanne and her band return to the West Coast this week for a special concert at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Oct 2nd or catch them Oct 5th in S.F. at the 2014 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival – Golden Gate Park!
