Cabaret singer Bobby Short was a long tenured champion of The Great American Songbook with a 35 year run at the esteemed Cafe Carlyle in New York City. A favorite performer of Woody Allen’s, Short recorded a full album of Cy Coleman repertoire in 1963 for Atlantic Records entitled, My Personal Property.
A close musical friend of an earlier generation of writers such as Cole Porter, Noel Coward, George Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hart, Short shows “he is worthy of such company as important Coleman interpreters as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett” says William Ruhlmann of AllMusic, “and demontrates that Coleman and Carolyn Leigh are worthy of the company of the classic songwriters he usually covers”.
This week’s tune is one of our favorite ballads of all time and was also recorded over the years by Tony Bennett, Shirley Horn, Blossom Dearie, and Liza Minnelli.

It was twenty years ago this month with an MTV Unplugged album that Tony Bennett stormed back to the top of the charts with an incredible comeback that has lasted to this day. Tony Bennett feat. the Ralph Sharon Trio and special guests, Elvis Costello and K.D. Lang, delivered a masterful interpretation of his beloved Great American Songbook to a whole new generation.
Tony performed one our favorite ballads that night with a song he originally recorded in 1958 on the album, Long Ago and Far Away, Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh‘s beautifully romantic “It Amazes Me”. The album would go on to win Grammy awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance & Album of the Year on its’ way to platinum status. Tony doesn’t just perform these songs, he embodies them like non-other. You can view his magnificent performance HERE.
Today, at 88 years old, Tony continues to be one of the greatest champions and interpreters of The Great American Songbook there ever was. September 23, 2014 saw the release of his collaborative jazz album, Cheek to Cheek with Lady Gaga. Cheek to Cheek (which coincidentally features another Coleman/Leigh song he originally recorded in 1958, “Firefly”), landed at the top of Billboard’s Top 200 album chart marking the second No. 1 in his prolific career while also making Bennett the oldest living artist to earn a No. 1 album, beating a record he previously set in 2011 with his Duets II album.
