Cy Coleman – I’ve Got Your Number

(click song title above to listen)

On June 17th, the fine folks at Sony Legacy released a remastered digital version of Cy Coleman‘s dapper debut vocal album If My Friends Could See Me Now, Cy Coleman Sings His Own Big Hits With Orchestra. The set, originally released in 1967 on Columbia Records “was conceived on 52nd street, mulled over in Beverly Hills, rehearsed on the French Riviera and recorded in London”. Credit Des Champ, Gordon Franks and Peter Jeffries – three distinguished British arrangers and pub crawlers – for the fine arrangements.

“In an era where ‘singer-composer’ has often come to mean someone who finds himself in front of a microphone with nothing to sing and simply takes matters into his own hands, I’m hoping this album strikes a responsive chord among those of us who stubbornly measure the top-forty hit songs not by the week, but by the decade, or as in the case of one recalcitrant quite close to this writer, the half-century.” Edward Keibart (from the original liner notes). Mission accomplished!

Jack Jones – I’ve Got Your Number

(click song title above to listen)

Remember that scene from American Hustle when Christian Bale and Amy Adams danced and lip sync’d to “I’ve Got Your Number”? We loved all of it, the scene, the choice of song, that sweet comb-over, and the rest of a stellar soundtrack!

Released on December 13th, 2013, David O. Russell’s American black comedy crime film won three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Amy Adams for Best Actress, and one for Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress. The soundtrack features classic songs by ELO, Wings, Chris Stills, Tom Jones and more (read a great interview with Music Supervisor Susan Jacobs HERE). Jack Jones appears as himself/night club singer in the film and recorded the Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh standard in one afternoon and shot the scene the next day. Jones, who became a major jazz and pop singer in the 1960s, recorded numerous Coleman compositions over the years starting with one of our faves, “Real Live Girl” from his 1963 album, She Loves Me for Kapp Records.

This week’s top tune was originally written for the hit 1962 Broadway Musical, Little Me has been recorded over the years by the likes of Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, and Jill Sobule.

Ella Fitzgerald – I’ve Got Your Number

We’re a little shocked that it took us this long to feature a tune from the catalog sung by the First Lady of Song, but better late than never as they say.

We continue this week with another gem from the great West Coast arranger Marty Paich and his work with arguably the greatest singer the U.S. has ever produced, Ella Fitzgerald.

A stunning album,Whisper Not, was recorded on July 20, 1966 at United Western Recorders in Hollywood with the great Shelly Manne on drums. It would become Ella’s last studio album for Verve Records and Marty Paich (arranger for Sinatra, Ray Charles, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Diamond) delivered a dozen beautifully arranged standards including Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh‘s “I’ve Got Your Number”.

Originally written for the Broadway musical, Little Me, the song has also been recorded by the likes of Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, and Jill Sobule.

Notoriously shy, it’s been said that Ella usually kept to herself between gigs and rehearsals. Fitzgerald later explained, “I don’t want to say the wrong thing, which I always do, but I think I do better when I sing”. Yes Ella, you do just fine!
