“Gaby Moreno‘s Ilusión represents a high-water mark in a musical career that’s never been predictable. It’s one of the strongest statements I’ve heard from a musician who ignores boundaries and genre classifications to create a sound greater than the sum of its parts.” – Felix Contreras, NPR Music
This week we had to spotlight Gaby‘s stunning Spanish language cover of Sam Phillips‘ “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us” from her recently Grammy-nominated fifth album Ilusión.
Gaby has been one of our favorite singers in L.A. and beyond for some time now. Equal parts jazz singer, blues singer, and Latin American Folk poet, her performances never fail to inspire.
Be sure to catch Gaby tonight with her band at The Roxy or with an all-star band this Sunday December 11th at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in a Bluegrass Situation Presentation: A Tribute to Linda Ronstadt. The show will Feature performances by friends and colleagues of Linda including Jackson Browne, Maria Muldaur, JD Souther, David Lindley, and several surprise guests. Also appearing will be contemporary artists influenced by her musical legacy including Grace Potter, Dawes, I’m With Her (Sara Watkins, Aoife O’Donovan, Sarah Jarosz), all let the by Watkins Family Hour house band feat. Sara & Sean Watkins. Both Guaranteed to be amazing nights!

“Burn Down This Town” – from Rosanne Cash’s Grammy nominated, critically acclaimed Black Cadillac – is a track filled with a perfect mix of attitude and grace. The sentimental urgency of the song, co-written by Rosanne and her producer/guitarist/husband John Leventhal, captivates from the first listen. Black Cadillac – billed by her label as a “12 song musical memoir” – was a fitting tribute to her mother, father and stepmother, all who passed within a two-year span during the writing and recording of this album. Rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and Newsweek – among so many others – hailed the album as being Rosanne’s greatest work to date.
In February of this year Rosanne was presented with the 2012 AFTRA Media and Entertainment Excellence Award, an annual gala taking place in New York where talent in television, film and broadcasting communities are honored. Rosanne also recently shared the stage at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, OK at the Woody Guthrie Centennial Tribute with the likes of the Flaming Lips, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp, Taylor Hansen and more.
Last month, Rosanne held a one-week “digital residency” on AOL’s The Boot music site – each day premiering an exclusive video from fan requested set list, titled Live from Zone C. An intimate performance recorded entirely in the living room of her New York City home to celebrate the release of the 2-disc anthology, The Essential Rosanne Cash.
Oh, and if you don’t already follow Rosanne’s tweets, we strongly suggest you do. You won’t be sorry: @rosannecash
