Tift Merritt – Eastern Light

(click song title above to listen)

And still my shadow is waiting for you
like it always used to
Hanging around and looking behind me
so that you can find me
In the eastern light

On this week’s Top Tune, Tift Merritt accompanied by Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, delivers a gorgeous and haunting elegy to a failed relationship. It’s one of our faves on Merritt’s most recent album Stitch of the World which features the best of the best; Jay Bellerose on drums, Jennifer Condos on bass, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, and Marc Ribot on guitar.

“This album will be on many year-end lists come December” – Exclaim.

Tift Merritt – Cadillac

This week’s Top Tune is a vintage, unreleased Tift Merritt track that happens to be one of our faves.

“It was part of our very first set of band songs and I played telecaster on it in the clubs.” remembers Tift. “I can remember writing it in the farmhouse where I lived out in the country with my dog. I had a piano painted red. I did not have a Cadillac, but I can remember the feeling of wanting to be someone’s race car. I like that idea”.

There’s one thing for sure, Tift Merritt is a cruiser. When she’s not on tour in support of her 5th critically acclaimed and most recent studio album, Traveling Alone (and its’ deluxe box set companion, Traveling Alone Deluxe Edition) you might catch her as a featured artist with classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein performing compositions from their intriguing lp, Night or often sharing a stage with Andrew Bird to boot.

Tift will be heading out on her first tour of Australia in April supporting Jason Isbell and will appear tonight at City Winery NYC w/Steve Earle. You can also catch her at Lincoln Center with Mary Chapin Carpenter & The New York Philharmonic on 2/28 & 3/1. For more tour dates and info click HERE.
