Kendra Morris – Waiting

Often compared to such contemporaries as Alice Smith, Mayer Hawthorne, Alice Russell and Leela James, Kendra Morris is deeply rooted in the great soul and funk of the late-60′s and early-70′s. Her vocal power beautiful, her artistry ever-evolving. This week’s top tune got the party started as the lead-off track on her 2012 debut lp Banshee on Wax Poetics Records.

Look for her followup lp, Mockingbird on July 30th. This all-covers affair will take you on a ride through classics by David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones and more. She and her collaborator and producer Jeremy Page put their sweet and soulful stamp throughout. Check out this feature from The Wall Street Journal with a clip of Kendra’s version of Radiohead’s “Karma Police”.

Upcoming Tour Dates: 5/29 Savannah, GA – 5/30 Atlanta, GA – 6/2 Asheville, NC – 6/5 Philly – 6/13 – Brooklyn, NY – 6/14 – Philly – 6/21 – Brooklyn, NY – 7/11 – SF – 7/16 – Boston, MA. Set times and venues HERE.

Chico Mann (feat. Kendra Morris) – Same Old Clown

This week’s Top Tune features the first single from Chico Mann’s upcoming lp, Magical Thinking on Soundway Records. Guitarist with the band Antibalas, multi instrumentalist, producer & remixer, Chico Mann (AKA Marcos Garcia) has in the past worked with the likes of TV On The Radio, The Roots and Dam Funk as well as remixing Little Dragon and Alice Russell among others.

Garcia’s love affair with synthesizers, drum machines, and 80′s freestyle expands the vocabulary of traditional Afrobeat in new directions which might very well be described as spacey electronic nu-merengue. Lucky for us, we’re along for the ride. With a little inspiration from a Notable Muse, Same Old Clown features our very own Kendra Morris on vocals and is available now on iTunes HERE. Kudos to Notable’s Jeremy Page for the mix!

Chico Mann – I Feel It (Captain Planet Remix)

Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann), longtime member of Antibalas, multi instrumentalist, guitarist and remixer, drops his 5th solo album Magical Thinking in March against a backdrop of pop sensibilities and guest vocalists including our very own Kendra Morris. The album draws as much on 80′s funk, boogie and electro as merengue and Afro-beat.

His most recent LP Analog Drift (2010), a KCRW favorite, was released through Wax Poetics Records. As Garcia toured throughout the US. Jon Pareles (NY Times) praised his live show’s “far-reaching electronica” that had the ability “to dissolve decades, along with borders”. Notable writer/producer Jeremy Page mixed the new album for Soundway Records and this week’s Top Tune brings you a sneak peek of Mann’s ascension with “I Feel It” Captain Planet Remix

Kendra Morris – The Plunge

Kendra Morris grew up imbued with a sense of music—her parents played in bands together, and she often broke into their cabinets full of vinyl to listen to their favorite records. As Marvin Gaye, the Spinners, War, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, and the Temptations washed over her, they soon became hers too. She sang along to her favorite albums with a voice she discovered soon after she learned how to talk.

“I was three years old, and I got up and asked my parents’ friends if they wanted my little voice or my big voice,” Morris remembers. “And I did this little voice, but then I did this big operatic voice. Maybe that was ingrained in me, because they say some of the main parts of you develop before you’re even six years old.”

Big voice, little voice, bring it on!

Her debut lp Banshee produced by our very own Jeremy Page is available now on cd, vinyl, or digital via our friends at Wax Poetics Records. Check out the new video for POW here.
