Written by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh for the hit 1962 musical Little Me starring Sid Caesar (nominated for 10 Tony’s, one win for the legendary Bob Fosse). Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee were buddies with Cy and both had hit pop versions of the song the following year; Ella Fitzgerald also had considerable success with it in 1966.
This version features the lovely and always awesome Jill Sobule on vocals, Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers on keys, Jay Bellerose on drums and an arrangement by producer Dave Palmer. Jill’s recording appears on The Best is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman
Check out this clip of (the incredibly sexy) Joey Heatherton performing the song on a 1965 episode of the Dean Martin Show!

Happy New Year and welcome to a special Wednesday edition of Notable’s Top Tune of the Week…
We are very exited to let you know that we have just re-released our 2009 tribute album to Cy Coleman digitally through the good people at IODA. So, as of today, you should find the album available wherever fine digital music is sold (iTunes, Amazon, etc). “The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Coleman” features performances by a variety of today’s most compelling female vocalists, including Patty Griffin, Sam Phillips, Nikka Costa, Jill Sobule, Madeleine Peyroux, Missy Higgins and more – lovingly produced by the talented Dave Palmer.
“Why Try To Change Me Now” was Cy Coleman’s first major cut and hit… recorded by some crooner named Frank Sinatra. Over the years such diverse luminaries as Sammy Davis Jr with Count Basie, Brook Benton, and Elvin Jones have recorded beautifully unique interpretations of this classic song. Fiona’s recent reading absolutely floors anyone who listens, and she tackles the tune in a way that truly makes it her own. Apple’s vocals, as per usual, are stunning – that mix of vulnerability and confidence that only she can exude. We are honored that she chose to cut this and another Cy classic (“I Walk A Little Faster”) for the tribute project.
Check out Fiona’s incredible live reading of the song, filmed at Los Angeles’ famed Largo at the Coronet, HERE
