Chico Mann – Same Old Clown (Kon remix)

(click the song title above to play)

“I try to say the sweetest things to keep you coming back”…this week’s Top Tune is a remix of a favorite track from Marcos Garcia‘s (AKA Chico Mann) third solo LP, 2013′s Magical Thinking on Soundway Records.

Garcia is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and a founding member of Antibalas. Marcos has in the past worked with the likes of TV On The Radio, The Roots, and Dam Funk as well as remixing Little Dragon and Alice Russell.

Like many of his previous outings, Chico Mann’s Magical Thinking lp combines latin, freestyle, and 80s electro funk. On Same Old Clown, these influences provide the perfect backdrop for slinky vocals by Notable alum Kendra Morris. DJ Kon who is known as one of the best Disco/Funk/Soul/Boogie DJs in the world, provides the remix.

You can hear Garcia’s latest single “Un Poquito Mas” with Captain Planet on the album Esperanto Slang which is currently #1 on CMJ’s World Music Chart. Look out for Marcos on tour with Antibalas early 2015!

Chico Mann – One Day Late

This week’s Top Tune comes from songwriter, producer, remixer, guitar player and all-around champion of good sounds and good vibes, Marcos J. Garcia. Raised in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood to Cuban-born parents, Marcos from a young age was soaked in the sounds of afro beat, Latin jazz and 80′s freestyle. Marcos is best known as a founding and current member of Brooklyn-based afrobeat ensemble Antibalas, which is modeled after Fela Kut’s Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri’s Harlem River Drive Orchestra.

It was around 2006 that Marcos created the musical time machine that has become Chico Mann. Blending 1970′s Afrobeat and 1980′s Freestyle and Afro Cuban music while paving the way for something new. “One Day Late” was written by Notable’s own, Sam Phillips, and appears on one of our favorite records of the year, Chico Mann’s Magical Thinking. Kudos! to our own Jeremy Page for the mix.

Kendra Morris – Waiting

Often compared to such contemporaries as Alice Smith, Mayer Hawthorne, Alice Russell and Leela James, Kendra Morris is deeply rooted in the great soul and funk of the late-60′s and early-70′s. Her vocal power beautiful, her artistry ever-evolving. This week’s top tune got the party started as the lead-off track on her 2012 debut lp Banshee on Wax Poetics Records.

Look for her followup lp, Mockingbird on July 30th. This all-covers affair will take you on a ride through classics by David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones and more. She and her collaborator and producer Jeremy Page put their sweet and soulful stamp throughout. Check out this feature from The Wall Street Journal with a clip of Kendra’s version of Radiohead’s “Karma Police”.

Upcoming Tour Dates: 5/29 Savannah, GA – 5/30 Atlanta, GA – 6/2 Asheville, NC – 6/5 Philly – 6/13 – Brooklyn, NY – 6/14 – Philly – 6/21 – Brooklyn, NY – 7/11 – SF – 7/16 – Boston, MA. Set times and venues HERE.
