Jon Brion – Trouble

Here’s the face of trouble
It’s the face I wear
and it may invite you in
but I won’t go there.

…sings Jon Brion on this weeks’ Top Tune from his 2001 solo album Meaningless. A poignant gem, one of our all-time favorites from the composer to the scores of I Heart Huckabees, Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, This Is 40, & ParaNorman and so many great others. Here’s to getting into and/or out of a little trouble in 2013…

Jon Brion – Walking Through Walls

Nothing in this world is gonna hold me
No thugs on the road are gonna roll me
No fast-talking girl is gonna slow me
Nothing’s gonna stop me at all
I’m walking through walls

In 2001, Jon Brion released his first – and thus far, only – solo album, Meaningless. Jon certainly did not rest on his laurels in the time before and since, having scored a batch of critically acclaimed films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I ♥ Huckabees, etc) and produced everyone from Kanye West to FIona Apple to Best Coast. Upon release, Meaningless instantly met with tremendous critical acclaim and has retained a massive cult following. “Walking Through Walls” – co written with his pal, the incredible Grant-Lee Phillips – is a Notable office favorite… we dare you not to sing along.

On the film side, Jon recently wrapped up scoring the Focus Features animated film ParaNorman, due out this August. He is currently working on the next Judd Apatow film, This Is 40 – a sort-of sequel to 2007′s Knocked Up – which is set to hit theaters in December.

LA residents and visitors, be sure to catch Jon Brion live as he performs at his second home, Largo at the Coronet. You can witness one of these legendary performances at the end of just about every month. To see a schedule of upcoming performances and to buy tickets, click HERE.

Jon Brion – Knock Yourself Out

Today’s Top Tune is a song most will know from David O. Russell’s “existential comedy” I ♥ Huckabees. Huckabees was, of course, scored by Jon Brion – and he contributed this song to soundtrack of the film, which featured a incredible ensemble cast including Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Naomi Watts and Mark Walhberg.

In addition to I ♥ Huckabees, Jon’s film scoring credits include Hard Eight, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Break-Up, Synecdoche, New York, Step Brothers, Glago’s Guest, The Other Guys, The Future, and two films scheduled for release this year: the 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller adventure ParaNorman, and Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up “sequel” This Is Forty.

On the “pop” side of his career, Jon has worked as a writer and/or producer for the diverse likes of Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Aimee Mann, Katy Perry, Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Spoon, Best Coast, Of Montreal, Dido, and Keane, to name but a few. His semi-regular gigs at his LA home Largo at the Coronet remain consistent sellouts – his next performance is set for March 30. If you live in or are visiting the LA area, come down and see why these shows have become the stuff of legend.
