Tift Merritt – Broken

“Her wonderful voice, smooth and warm with throaty twang and unforced power, has free rein to do what it does best on 11 fine new songs.”

So said Mojo Magazine on this week’s Top Tune, one of our faves from Tift Merritt‘s third album, 2008′s Another Country. The album was a bit of a departure from the Southern Soul style of her two previous albums. After years of near constant touring, Tift took a winters-long hiatus to an apartment in Paris to breathe in the air and explore. The result was described as a tender and melodic collection of ‘deceptively sharp tales of hearts in distress’. An album of freedom and intimacy.

Broken was nominated for Americana Song of The Year and you can watch the video HERE.

Tour updates: fresh off the heels of a sold-out tour of Australia with Jason Isbell, look for Tift as a featured member of Andrew Bird’s new band, The Hands of Glory. They will tour all summer long with a stop at Central Park Summerstage – NYC on July 8th and capped off by a solo show with Eric Heywood on pedal steel - Aug 7th - Americanafest NYC - Lincoln Center Out of Doors. In film news, Tift wrote songs for the animated film, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return opening this Friday (starring Dan Aykroyd, Hugh Dancy, Lea Michele, Jim Belushi) and we recently had the pleasure of crashing her scoring session for an independent short film called An Illusion in Red and White. The film is based on the short story by Stephen Crane (The Red Badge of Courage) and the score is a stunner. Check out the kickstarter page HERE.
