Rosanne Cash – A Feather’s Not a Bird

This week of Thanksgiving we give thanks for many things. One of them being the great artistry of Rosanne Cash and her excellent upcoming new album, The River & The Thread coming Jan 14, 2014 on Blue Note Records. This week’s Top Tune is the lead off track from the album which was co-written and produced by Rosanne’s husband and long-time collaborator, guitar player, and arranger, John Leventhal.

Her last two albums, Black Cadillac (2006) and The List (2009) were both nominated for Grammy Awards. The List – an exploration of essential songs as selected and given to Rosanne by her father, Johnny Cash – was also named Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. In addition, her best-selling 2010 memoir, Composed, was decribed by the Chicago Tribune as “one of the best accounts of an American life you will likely ever read.”.

The new album features a long list of great guests including: John Paul White (The Civil Wars), Derek Trucks, John Prine, Tony Joe White, Rodney Crowell, Cory Chisel, and Amy Helm. “When we started forming the idea for this record” says Cash, “it felt like it was going to be the third part of a trilogy – with Black Cadillac mapping out a territory of mourning and loss and then The list, celebrating my family’s musical legacy. I feel this record ties past and present together through all those people and places in the South I knew and thought I had left behind”.

You can pre-order the new album HERE and you can catch Rosanne Cash in residency 12/5 (Coolidge Auditorium), 12/6 (Thomas Jefferson Building), and 12/7 (Thomas Jefferson Building) as part of the Library of Congress Songs of America project – Washington DC. The evenings include a concert, a round robin for songwriters, and a conversation with Natasha Trethewey, U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. More info HERE.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
