Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh – Real Live Girl

(click song title above to listen)

This week we’re delighted to bring you the recently discovered original demo of Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh‘s “Real Live Girl” sung by the writers themselves! The song was written for and sung by Sid Caesar in the hit 1962 Broadway musical Little Me which went on to be nominated for 10 Tony Awards. Jack Jones’ suave & stylish interpretation would find success on his 1963 album She Loves Me.

Cy & Carolyn met at the Brill Building in the late-1950s and would go on to create music history together with standards like “The Best Is Yet To Come” originally cut by Tony Bennett, “Witchcraft” for Frank Sinatra, “Pass Me By” recorded by Peggy Lee and written for the Cary Grant film Father Goose, and “Hey Look Me Over” for the 1960 musical Wildcat starring Lucille Ball just to name a few.

Both writers would come to admit in interviews that their collaborative relationship would often result in “legendary battles”. Coleman blamed her possessiveness and jealousy of his work with his jazz trio and Leigh summed it up as “we were young…there were a couple of very sensitive egos involved”. They would manage to reconcile differences for the most part, even renting summer homes in the Hamptons close enough for Cy to swim over for an afternoon of writing. Sadly their creative partnership would eventually buckle under the strain of the London premiere of Little Me in 1963 but their extremely prolific five years together would produce some of the most clever, catchy, sophisticated tunes ever to grace the Great American Songbook!

Jill Sobule – I’ve Got Your Number

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s tune was written by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh for the hit 1962 musical Little Me starring Sid Caesar (nominated for 10 Tony’s, one win for the legendary Bob Fosse). Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee were buddies with Cy and both had hit pop versions of the song the following year; Ella Fitzgerald also had considerable success with it in 1966.

This version celebrates its’ 7th birthday tomorrow and features the lovely and always awesome Jill Sobule on vocals, Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers on keys, Jay Bellerose on drums and an arrangement by producer Dave Palmer. From 2009′s critically acclaimed tribute album: The Best Is Yet To Come, The Songs of Cy Coleman.

Check out this clip of (the incredibly sexy) Joey Heatherton performing the song on a 1965 episode of the Dean Martin Show!

Tony Bennett – On The Other Side of The Tracks

Las Vegas Boulevard was renamed Tony Bennett Boulevard this past weekend in honor of the singing legend’s contribution to establishing Vegas as the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World. The ceremony took place on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York Hotel & Casino.

Several hotels and casinos dimmed their lights in homage where Tony headlined (he has outlived many of the others!). Bennett was also the guest of honor at Keep Memory Alive‘s 20th annual Power of Love Gala at the MGM Garden which raises funds and awareness for Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Heath and its fight against brain disease including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases, multiple sclerosis and multiple system atrophy. For more info and to donate, click HERE.

Tony recorded this week’s Top Tune in 1963 for his Columbia Records album, This Is All I Ask. The song was written by his pal Cy Coleman and the great lyricist Carolyn Leigh for the hit Broadway musical comedy Little Me. The set reached #24 on the Billboard Top 200.

Jack Jones – I’ve Got Your Number

(click song title above to listen)

Remember that scene from American Hustle when Christian Bale and Amy Adams danced and lip sync’d to “I’ve Got Your Number”? We loved all of it, the scene, the choice of song, that sweet comb-over, and the rest of a stellar soundtrack!

Released on December 13th, 2013, David O. Russell’s American black comedy crime film won three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Amy Adams for Best Actress, and one for Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting Actress. The soundtrack features classic songs by ELO, Wings, Chris Stills, Tom Jones and more (read a great interview with Music Supervisor Susan Jacobs HERE). Jack Jones appears as himself/night club singer in the film and recorded the Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh standard in one afternoon and shot the scene the next day. Jones, who became a major jazz and pop singer in the 1960s, recorded numerous Coleman compositions over the years starting with one of our faves, “Real Live Girl” from his 1963 album, She Loves Me for Kapp Records.

This week’s top tune was originally written for the hit 1962 Broadway Musical, Little Me has been recorded over the years by the likes of Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, and Jill Sobule.
