“Anyone who rues the scarcity of smart, serious pop music for grown-ups should snap of up the entire Sam Phillips catalog”. wrote the Boston Globe. “Don’t miss Phillips’s splendid new effort, Don’t Do Anything, a collection that dances in her signature mystery space between darkness and light with strange grace, emotional candor, and winsome hooks”.
In 2008, after a long string of gorgeous and layered pop albums produced by T Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips found herself in 2008 producing her own sessions for the first time on her seventh album, Don’t Do Anything (Nonesuch Records).
The album is rooted in a live performance setting with superb string arrangements from The Section Quartet on several tracks. It has been said that there are themes on this album that suggest notions of betrayal and broken hearts…and the uncertain navigation of the soul. Check out this intimate live performance of “Little Plastic Life” HERE.
At the time of the album’s release, Sam had just completed scoring all of the original music to the long running/Emmy-winning fan favorite TV series Gilmore Girls. The show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, a professional dancer, personally tapped Sam to score the show because she didn’t want a typical soundtrack, she wanted the music to be one of the characters in the story…as though it were the music inside the mother and daughter’s heads. Fans are rejoicing at the news of the recent announcement of Netflix‘s four-episode revival featuring the majority of the original cast (Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel) and Pallidino at the helm. Filming began last week and the original score will once again be provided by Phillips. Get ready for the triumphant return of the La La’s!
