Captain Planet and Chico Mann have reunited for a slice of chilled-out global bass on this week’s top tune, “Aguacero”. It’s the first track on the new EP, More Slang from Brooklyn-based label, Bastard Jazz which also features a sweet LondonBridge remix of “Un Poquito Mas”.
Captain Planet (Charlie Bethel) began Dj-ing and making beats on a Tascam 4-track in his teens. He became obsessed with vinyl records & began digging for samples which led to a love for Reggae, Latin, and African music. Charlie’s worldwide travels and tireless search for new sounds led to a collaborative friendship with Chico Mann & to his distinctive “Gumbo Funk” style as a producer. Speaking of travel, Chico Mann has been scheduled to appear as a featured artist at the historic Manana 2016, to take place May 4-6, 2016 in Santiago de Cuba . Though Chico Mann‘s songs are obviously built for today’s dance floors, his influences are clearly vintage. On his latest album, Magical Thinking, he’s leapt back to the early 1980s style known as boogie. This is not the boogie of the rock ‘n’ roll pneumonia and boogie-woogie flu days; it’s a retroactively named genre that arose from the ashes of post-disco and funk music. Boogie is known for its big bubblegum bass lines and sticky stacks of synthesizers, and Mann digs deep into both here – Oliver Wang, NPR.
We have to say, Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann) always brings the deep Boogie. Whether as a member of the mighty Brooklyn-based afrobeat band, Antibalas, or a producer/remixer (Little Dragon, KonKoma) or with his solo work, Garcia never fails to connect the mind, the heart, and the body.

“This is the future of music, in case you didn’t know. Chico Mann has come from the future to show you how the past should have sounded. This time-traveling mastermind is basically the Jersey City Cuban James Brown of the Casio. You heard it here first…Welcome to the future past.” – Turntable Lab
