Mark Murphy – I Love My Wife

(click song title above to listen)

Vocalist Mark Murphy, the iconoclastic cabaret singer, was a six-time Grammy nominee known for his improvisational skill and wide vocal range. Born in Syracuse, New York in 1932, Murphy settled in London in the early 1960s and remained in Europe recording for British labels such as Fontana and Immediate before returning to the states in 1973 and signing to the Muse label. Mark recorded a total of 23 albums for the Muse and HighNote labels and was the recipient of the 1996, 1997, 2000, and 2001 Down Beat magazine readers jazz poll for Best Male Vocalist of the Year. Murphy continued to tour internationally into his 80s before passing away in 2015 leaving behind a long list of ardent supporters and admiring musicians and singers.

This week’s top tune was released on Mark’s 1979 album Mark Murphy Sings Mostly Dorothy Fields and Cy Coleman for the Audiophile label. The track features the Loonis McGlohon Trio and can be heard in a killer scene in Robert Schwartzman‘s excellent directorial debut film, Dreamland (streaming now on Netflix).

Schwartzman, best known as the frontman of the band Rooney, adds serious filmmaker chops to his resume in a well-crafted, well acted gem of a film. Nods to the extended Coppola/Schwartzman family pepper the project, brother Jason and mother Talia Shire play supporting roles to stellar lead performances by Johnny Simmons, Amy Landecker, and Beverly D’Angelo in a Graduate-style coming-of-age tale. Not to be missed!

Frank Sinatra – I Love My Wife

(click song title above to listen)

My mind at times

May dwell on sex

If someone’s rating dreams

Then most of mine I guess are double X

It was this week back in 1976 in Hollywood when Frank Sinatra recorded his next instant Cy Coleman classic; “I Love My Wife”. With a track record that included “Witchcraft” (1957), “Why Try To Change Me Now” (1959), and “The Best Is Yet To Come” (1964), Sinatra knew he could count on his pal Cy to provide him with signature songs.

I Love My Wife is a song from the hilarious hit Broadway musical about two married couples contemplating a carnal adventure during the sexual revolution of the 1970s. The lyrics are by Michael Stewart and the music is by Coleman. The innovative long-running show earned a Tony Award for director Gene Saks and another for featured actor Lenny Baker.

Tune in Sunday December 6th 9PM ET/PT on CBS for Sinatra 100 – An All-Star Grammy Concert recorded live at Wynn Las Vegas’ Encore Theatre celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Chairman’s birth!
