Barnum (1980 Original Broadway Cast) – There Is A Sucker Born Ev’ry Minute

This week’s Top Tune salutes the launch of producer Cameron Mackintosh‘s revival of Cy Coleman‘s 1980 Tony Award-winning musical Barnum beginning July 15, 2013 at the Chichester Festival Theatre – UK. Winner of 3 Tony’s and starring Jim Dale, Glenn Close and Kevin Kline, the original Broadway production (based on the life of showman P.T. Barnum) ran for 854 performances at The St. James Theater and spawned several successful touring productions in London, Australia, and Madrid.

The musical features a score by Cy Coleman (who was also a producer of the original production), lyrics by Michael Stewart and a book by Mark Bramble. The original director-choreographer Joe Layton deftly turned the theatre into a circus combining real life circus performers with musical theater singers and dancers. The new production offers a revised book by Cameron Mackintosh and Bramble and stars 2 time Tony-winning actor, singer, juggler, and acrobat Christopher Fitzgerald (Wicked, Young Frankenstein) as P.T. Barnum.

Frank Sinatra – I Love My Wife

My mind at times

May dwell on sex

If someone’s rating dreams

Then most of mine I guess are double X

Recorded in 1977, “I Love My Wife” became an instant Frank Sinatra classic and was adored by married women all over.  With a track record that included “Witchcraft” (1957) and “The Best Is Yet To Come” (1964), Sinatra knew he could count on his pal Cy Coleman to provide him with signature songs.

I Love My Wife is also the title of the hilarious hit Broadway musical about two married couples contemplating a carnal adventure during the sexual revolution of the 1970s; lyrics by Michael Stewart and music by Cy Coleman.
