The 33 year old Mimi Hines was enormously successful when she made her 1965 Broadway debut in Funny Girl taking over for Barbra Streisand. The show had moved from the Winter Garden to the Majestic Theatre, then ultimately to the Broadway Theatre where it played out another eighteen post-Streisand months.

Hines career as a singer and comedienne started in August of 1958 when she and her partner, Phil Ford, appeared on The Tonight Show for the first time. Hines and Ford were in instant hit and frequently appeared on that show and many others while headlining in all of the top night clubs in the country. Her successful run in theater continued with national touring companies of I Do! I Do!, Anything Goes, Never Too Late, Pajama Game, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Hello, Dolly!, Grease, and many others.

This week’s top tune was recorded in 1966 and arranged by the great Don Costa for Decca Records. It’s a song written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the hit musical Sweet Charity. It was written for a scene Bob Fosse had adapted directly from the Federico Fellini film, Nights of Cabiria set at a carnival where a hypnotist took Charity back to her childhood. The scene was eventually cut from the show but the tune poignantly underscored Charity’s intrinsically hopeful nature and became a cabaret and supper club favorite.
