Bramble Rose, the debut album by Tift Merritt, celebrated its 14 year anniversary last month with a recently released deluxe limited vinyl edition. Don Henley recalls of its title track, “I’d wanted to record that song ever since I heard it!”. Henley followed through with that desire when it became the stunning lead-off track on his #1 2015 country album, Cass County featuring guest vocalists Miranda Lambert and Mick Jagger.

This week’s Top Tune “Virginia, No One Can Warn You” is another beauty from that album. American Songwriter exclaimed, “A clever one-shot video and production from Ethan Johns, “Virginia, No One Can Warn You” seems to be an artful way of one person realizing that some lessons just have to be learned the hard way.” In any case continues American Songwriter, “it’s a fine display of Merritt’s talent as a songwriter and performer and an example of how a sublime early song can sometimes set the table for an entire career”. Hear, Hear!

“There was so much sweetness in that time, something pure in making a first record. We were so excited to be in the studio together, to be in Los Angeles — everything was ahead and everything was happening for the first time. When I think of how all the miles I’ve seen began with this little seed, it gives me a great deal of hope. I could tell you 1,000 tender stories from those days. But maybe that is what those songs are.” – Tift Merritt

“I’m associated with California a lot because of that other band that I play in.” Henley tells Craig Shelburne of Rolling Stone. “but I really and truly was born and raised in Cass County, Texas. I’m a Southerner and a Texan. I have ancestors in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. So this is a natural progression for me. It’s not me trying to do the ‘Don Henley country album’. It’s who I am and where I come from.”
