Sara Watkins – Seesaw

(click song title above to listen)

This past week we celebrated the 111th anniversary of the birth of legendary librettist and lyricist, Dorothy Fields. Born in Allenhurst, New Jersey on July 15th 1905, Fields became a fiercely prolific and beloved figure in musical theater and film music.
With over 400 songs to her credit, Dorothy’s best known standards are among the most recognizable of any in the American musical canon including: “The Way You Look Tonight” (Jerome Kern), “A Fine Romance” (Kern), “On The Sunny Side of the Street” (Jimmy McHugh), and “Big Spender” (Cy Coleman).

Seesaw is the title tune of the last Broadway musical Fields would work on in her long career before her death in 1973. Seesaw was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 1974, winning two (Best Actor for Tommy Tune and Best Choreography); the female lead, Michelle Lee, won Best Actress at that year’s Drama Desk Awards.

This week’s version is a stunner by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek fame and our ├╝ber-talented compadre, pianist/producer Dave Palmer. In 2009, Sara Watkins released her first self-titled solo record (produced by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin) to tremendous acclaim, firmly establishing her as a solo artist who has only scratched the surface of her creative output. July 1, 2016 saw the release of Watkins’ stellar third solo album, Young In All The Wrong Ways “reintroducing her as a writer/artist of uncommon eloquence and consequence.” – Uncut Magazine. We couldn’t agree more!

Nickel Creek – Where Is Love Now

(click song title above to listen)

About one year ago the Grammy-winning trio Nickel Creek reformed after nine years of busy solo careers to pull off a 25th anniversary renunion tour. Luckily for us, they recorded a superb album to accompany it; the Grammy-nominated A Dotted Line on Nonesuch Records. Virtuosi Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins close out their album with one of our favorite covers of all time, the splendid Sam Phillips tune “Where Is Love Now” feat Sara Watkins on lead vocals.

Watch a great live version HERE.

If you can’t catch Nickel Creek members Sara and Sean Watkins and their Watkins Family Hour band (feat. Fiona Apple, Don Heffington, Sebastian Steinberg & special guests) tonight in Los Angeles at Largo at the Coronet, fear not. They are will be on tour all summer long. Also, the Watkins Family Hour debut album will be available on July 24 via Family Hour Records/Thirty Tigers. Click HERE for a full list of tour dates.

Sam Phillips – Where is Love Now

Between 2009 and 2011 Sam PhillipsThe Long Play digital subscription program yielded five incredible ep’s and the full length lp, Cameras in the Sky. This week’s Top Tune comes from the fifth and final ep of the series in 2010, the beautiful Days of the One Night Stands.

The song was first recorded by the great high lonesome-voiced Lubbock native, Jimmie Dale Gilmore on his 1996 album, Braver Newer World (Elektra Records). Produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion on guitars and keyboards, the song found a fitting home with Gilmore’s characteristically spiritual musical settings. Listen in on Jimmie’s version HERE.

Most recently, you can hear a magnificent new interpretation of the song on Grammy-winning artist Nickel Creek‘s brand new album, A Dotted Line on Nonesuch Records. A delicate yet powerful version that gives vocalist Sara Watkins room to breathe. We love all three versions, true artists each and every one.
