Lena Horne – The Rules of the Road

(click song title above to listen)

Singer/actress/civil rights activist Lena Horne pursued nightclub entertaining for more than 60 years. Her first job was at the Cotton Club in the 1930s (where she could perform but not be admitted as a customer) and grew to include successful concert stints all around the world until the 1990s. Her recording career stretched from 1936 to 2000 and brought her three Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989 and her own Tony-winning one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music in 1981.

This week’s Top Tune comes from her 1962 studio album for RCA Victor, Lena on the Blue Side, and features tunes mainly inspired by the blues brilliantly arranged and conducted by Marty Gold. This beloved torcher was written by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh and in addition to Lena’s stunning interpretation, the song has been recorded by the likes of Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Nikka Costa, and several times more by Tony Bennett.

Well, love often shows a funny return
The brighter it glows the longer you burn
And Lord only knows love has little concern
For the fools of the road

But that’s how it goes, you live and you lean
The rules of the road.

Nat King Cole – Rules of the Road

Nat King Cole could have and should have introduced this great Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh classic tune to the world when it was recorded in November of 1961. But Tony Bennett and Lena Horne got to beat him to it when Capitol Records decided to hold the release of the breathtaking Billy May-arranged lp, Let’s Face The Music!, until 1964.

Fans eventually reveled in a double-dose of Cole’s trademark soft, romantic delivery combined with May’s explosively punchy jazz orchestrations. Cole after all had his roots set deeply in jazz and May was said to have a sentimental streak a mile wide. The end result is a joy to hear in this sarcastic & slangy ode to the winding roads of romance.

Check out this great Nikka Costa rendition from the 2009 tribute album, The Best is Yet to Come, The Songs of Cy Coleman produced by Dave Palmer.

Nikka Costa – The Rules of the Road

First recorded by Nat King Cole in 1961, “The Rules of the Road” remains one of the most beloved tunes in the Notable catalog. Co-written by the legendary team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, the sultry “Rules” has been covered over the years by such luminaries as Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Shirley Horn, Lena Horn, Bobby Short, Buddy Greco, and Anita O’Day. In 2009 Nikka Costa recorded this soulful reading of the tune for the tribute album “The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman” – instantly making it her own.

We are proud to debut this never-before-seen video of Nikka’s incredible live performance of the song, filmed at Los Angeles’ famed Largo at the Coronet at the 2009 Cy Coleman Tribute Concert! Watch it HERE
