Jack Jones – Real Live Girl

Nothing can beat getting swept off your feet by a real. live. girl…sings Jack Jones on this gem from his 1963 album, She Loves Me. The song was originally sung by Sid Caesar from the hit Broadway musical Little Me running that same year which went on to be nominated for 10 Tony Awards.

Discovered singing in clubs in San Francisco by Peter King in 1961, Jack Jones was quickly signed to the Kapp label. Paired with arranger Jack Elliott for this one, Elliott captures the breezy, playful spirit of the song by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leah but throws in some bossa nova for good measure.

I’ll take the flowering hat
And the towering heel, and a squeal
of a real, live, girl.

hey, he’s just sayin’.

Bobby Hebb – I’ll Be Anything For You

Sometimes maybe we feel like we might make any deal in the world not to let it end. It was Bobby Hebb’s personal outpouring of grief over his divorce that’s been said to have fueled the beauty, anguish, and wistful hope displayed on his quietly influential 1970 album, Love Games.

“I’ll Be Anything For You” with an incredible arrangement by James Fleming and Dave Roberts, seeks to close that deal. The Love Games album came four years after Bobby Hebb’s monster 8 million selling single multi-format classic, “Sunny”, and a full two years before similar work by Gamble & Huff & The O’Jays. It would provide the template for the direction R&B would take through the late 70′s and early 80′s, music that one keeps for special moods, private times, and most of all, as David Morpheus points out on the original liner notes, for times perhaps when one is not in love at the moment but should be.

You can hear the full results on the remastered version of the album (thank you Rob Santos) HERE.
