Bobby Hebb – I’ll Be Anything For You

(click song title above to listen)

It was Bobby Hebb‘s personal outpouring of grief over his divorce that’s been said to have fueled the beauty, anguish, and wistful hope displayed on his quietly influential 1970 album, Love Games.

“I’ll Be Anything For You” with an incredible arrangement by James Fleming and Dave Roberts, seeks to close that deal. The Love Games album came four years after Bobby Hebb’s monster 8 million selling single multi-format classic, “Sunny”, and a full two years before similar work by Gamble & Huff & The O’Jays. It would provide the template for the direction R&B would take through the late 70′s and early 80′s, music that one keeps for special moods, private times, and most of all, as David Morpheus points out on the original liner notes, for times perhaps when one is not in love at the moment but should be.

Grady Tate – Would You Believe

(click song title above to listen)

Grady Tate, a legendary soul-jazz drummer and singer, may be best known for his session work with some of the finest jazz artists and vocalists of any generation: Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Lena Horne, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, and Wes Montgomery (to name a few) all used Grady on historic recordings.

Tate – who also served as a key member of the New York Jazz Quartet in the 70s – had a string of critically lauded solo records as well. His debut disc, 1968’s criminally out-of print Windmills Of My Mind, remains a highly collectable vinyl artifact of late 60s soul-jazz.

Musiq Soulchild – Just Friends (Sunny)

(click song title above to listen)

Musiq Soulchild has often cited such icons as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone and Ray Charles as his musical mentors, so it was no surprise when he used Bobby Hebb‘s iconic “Sunny” as the backbone of one of his biggest hits: “Just Friends (Sunny).

The tune made the Top 10 on the R&B Billboard singles chart, as well as making Top 40 of the mag’s Pop single rankings. In his career, Soulchild has had two platinum albums, four gold albums and seven hit singles, as well as amassing an impressive 11 Grammy nominations.

“Just Friends (Sunny)” was covered by none other than Prince on his 2002 release One Nite Alone: Live and was the inspiration for two recent & potent interpolations in Kehlani‘s “Down For You” ft. BJ The Chicago Kid and Wale‘s “The Need to Know” ft. SZA.
