Sam Phillips – Listen to the Rain

We just found out that a limited number of SIGNED copies of Sam Phillips‘ critically acclaimed 2013 album, Push Any Button, are now available at Sam’s webstore. Plus, Phillips recorded bonus tracks for everyone who purchases the album, in any format.

This week’s Top Tune (click song title above to play) features one of those bonus tracks, the beautiful “Listen to the Rain”.

“I wrote this song years ago when T Bone Burnett and I were thinking of making a country record together, but never recorded a version to release.” explains Sam. “When I sing or write country music it gets filtered through the other kinds of music I like and doesn’t sound like country to me…or perhaps it sounds like a different country.”

The track features excellent performances by Jay Bellerose (Ray LaMontagne, Elton John, Alison Krauss) on drums, Jennifer Condos (Bettye LaVette, Ray LaMontagne, Joe Henry) on bass, Eric Gorfain (The Section Quartet, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Fiona Apple) on electric guitars, strings, and Sam on acoustic guitars, vocals. Whatever your definition of country is, Listen to the Rain is country we want to live in.

Sam Phillips – Ask Me to Stay

“Making records is not that different from photography. You can focus in on one thing and make it big, or pull back to make it smaller and to include other objects in the picture.” –Sam Phillips

This week’s Top Tune is one of four bonus tracks to Sam Phillips‘ elegant 2013 album, Push Any Button available exclusively at samphillips.com.

“When I dress to go out, I usually end up taking off the jewelry I have put on…or the lipstick, or the belt, or the hat. I wish this sort of thing had occurred to me when I was trying to figure out Ask Me to Stay for the album. I kept thinking it needed more instruments, more overdubs, but it didn’t sound right so we didn’t finish it. When I listened again to consider it for an extra track, it sounded better when we took things off–especially in the beginning, to let it build.” continues Sam.

As usual, we love what’s been left in and the spaces in between. Another perfect portrait.Push Any Button is “A testament to an artist who is so capable of keeping you guessing every step along the fascinating way” – Pop Matters

Listen for more songs from this beautiful album in upcoming episodes of the new TV series, Murder in the First. The show is the latest from Steven Bochco and stars Kathleen Robertson & Taye Diggs. Sam also contributes to the original score. The show premiers Monday June 9th (TNT 10/9C).

Sam Phillips – O Holy Night

This week’s Top Tune comes from the wonderful Sam Phillips EP, Cold Dark Night. This was the second of five EP’s of her Long Play project, available exclusively to subscribers through samphillips.com on November 24th 2009. This collection of holiday songs featured two brand new original songs, “Cold Dark Night” and “It Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas”, plus Sam’s unique takes on “Silent Night” (featuring the vocals of Joe Henry), “Away in a Manger” and a re-recording of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” (which Sam originally recorded in 1992 as the end title for the anti-war film, A Midnight Clear.)

Congrats to Sam on a truly great year which saw the release of her tenth critically claimed lp, Push Any Button, sold-out concerts and for the original score to 18 episodes of ABC Family’s TV series, Bunheads.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe holiday season! See you in 2014.
