Rhett Miller & Rosanne Cash – As Close As I Came to Being Right

Notable pal Rhett Miller (he of the Old 97s) unveiled his sixth solo album last week; The Dreamer was released on his own Maximum Sunshine Records, and it’s a stunner.

Of the album’s 13 tracks, one is a cowrite and duet with our own Rosanne Cash. “As Close As I Came to Being Right” is not just a great tune – it reveals an amazing vocal chemistry between the two that surprised even them. We’ll keep the hype to a minimum here – we simply invite you to listen for yourself.

You can buy and download “As Close As I Came to Being Right” now on iTunes… alternately you can also buy the album as a download, CD, or limited edition vinyl LP directly from Rhett’s site HERE!

Jon Brion – I Believe She’s Lying

We are thrilled to start the new year by announcing that Jon Brion has joined Notable Music for exclusive publishing administrative agreement in the US. We are so proud to have him join our musical family of great songwriters.

As a producer and/or co-writer, Jon has worked with everyone from Kanye West to Fiona Apple, Spoon to Elliott Smith, Rufus Wainwright to Best Coast, to name but a few. Brion’s numerous film scores – from his Grammy nominated work on such modern classics as Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to current projects such as the forthcoming ParaNorman – have only grown his recognition as one of the most respected contemporary composers.

His semi-regular shows at LA’s famed Largo at the Coronet have literally become the stuff of legend – as the Largo site itself says “you never know who might drop down the chimney for some unannounced fun.” The too-numerous-to-list parade of Jon’s special guests over the years is a virtual who’s who of musicians and singers, from Neil Finn to Nels Cline, Sam Phillips to Brad Mehldau, Robyn Hitchcock to Aimee Mann… you get the idea.

Jon’s lone solo release, Meaningless, remains a critical favorite, and is regularly cited as an influential record for many artists and songwriters. It is from that album that we present “I Believe She’s Lying” – a classic slice of intricate pop from the brain Jon Brion. The tune has already been covered by a varied group, including Rhett Miller of the Old 97′s, genre-bending R&B wunderkind Spree Wilson, and a cappella group Reverse Osmosis.

Check out this clip of Jon performing “I Believe She’s Lying,” live at Largo.

Rhett Miller – Sunny

One of the most enduring soul/pop tunes of the last century, Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” has been covered from everyone from James Brown to Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett to Hampton Hawes… the list of icons that have performed the tune goes on and on (Want proof? Check THIS!).

Not long ago, Notable pal Rhett Miller of the Old 97′s travelled to Dallas to re-imagine the song for us (with the aid of producer Salim Nourallah)… the resulting effort is perhaps the finest pop/rock reading of the timeless tune. A wonderful arrangement – a classic Rhett Miller groove with tinges of light spaghetti western make for a very happy Notable Music Co. Thank you, Rhett!

Check out this very rare 1966 TV appearance of Bobby Hebb performing his classic hit HERE (a must see!)
