Sony Legacy celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Rosanne Cash‘s pioneering LP King’s Record Shop with a special edition 180-gram vinyl release and digital download with bonus tracks. Released on June 26, 1987, the album would prove a pivotal one not only in the career of Cash, but in the emergence of Americana as an heir to traditional country music. The set would also have the distinction of marking the first time a female artist had ever had four #1 singles on the Billboard Country charts from a single record. Cash’s covers of her father’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box”, John Hiatt’s “The Way We Make A Broken Heart”, John Stewart’s “Runaway Train” as well as “If You Change Your Mind,” a song she’d written with steel guitar player Hank DeVito, all climbed to the top of the chart.

Produced by Rodney Crowell (Rosanne’s then-husband), the set features a stellar band of players including Crowell, Vince Gill, Patty Smyth, Benmont Tench, Steve Winwood, and Randy Scruggs.

This is the real me, breakin’ down at last,
Hey, it’s the real me, crawlin’ out of my past,
Baby, the real me, wants the real you, so bad

Rosanne Cash – Blue Moon With Heartache

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s stunner of a top tune was the third single from Rosanne Cash‘s trailblazing 1981 album Seven Year Ache and her third #1 country hit. The single spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart.

In Rolling Stone‘s 50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own, Cash “conceived her niche as post-pub-rock and borderline New Wave, at least in the sense of Tom Petty and Steve Forbert, whose material she interprets”. The musicians and singers on this album are a who’s who of American roots music and include: Tony Brown, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Booker T. Jones, Albert Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Mickey Raphael, Hank DeVito, and Emory Gordy Jr. Check out this amazing clip from 1982!

Rosanne Cash – If You Change Your Mind

It was this week back in 1988 when Rosanne Cash scored her ninth #1 on the country chart with “If You Change Your Mind” from her pioneering lp King’s Record Shop.

The tune was co-written with pedal steel guitarist Hank DeVito of Hot Band fame and spent a total fifteen weeks on the chart!

King’s Record Shop would produce four #1 singles in all and is “Rosanne Cash’s classic, a work that transcends production and songwriting styles and the pop and country music of the time”. Thom Jurek, Allmusic Guide.
