Rosanne Cash – Blue Moon With Heartache

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s stunner of a top tune was the third single from Rosanne Cash‘s trailblazing 1981 album Seven Year Ache and her third #1 country hit. The single spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart.

In Rolling Stone‘s 50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own, Cash “conceived her niche as post-pub-rock and borderline New Wave, at least in the sense of Tom Petty and Steve Forbert, whose material she interprets”. The musicians and singers on this album are a who’s who of American roots music and include: Tony Brown, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Booker T. Jones, Albert Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Mickey Raphael, Hank DeVito, and Emory Gordy Jr. Check out this amazing clip from 1982!

Rosanne Cash – If You Change Your Mind

(click song title above to listen)

It was this week back in 1988 when Rosanne Cash scored her ninth #1 on the country chart with “If You Change Your Mind” from her pioneering lp King’s Record Shop.

The tune was co-written with pedal steel guitarist Hank DeVito of Hot Band fame and spent a total fifteen weeks on the chart!

King’s Record Shop would produce four #1 singles in all and is “Rosanne Cash’s classic, a work that transcends production and songwriting styles and the pop and country music of the time”. Thom Jurek, Allmusic Guide.

Rosanne Cash – Seven Year Ache

(click song title above to listen)

Vince Gill, a long time member of Rosanne Cash‘s band and a backing vocalist on her revolutionary 1981 smash album Seven Year Ache, brought the house down at the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony this past October when he performed this week’s top tune in honor of Rosanne’s induction to the Hall.
It was a fittingly poignant moment in an evening that celebrated Rosanne’s long and successful career as a songwriter and artist and one where she joins the Hall as the only father/daughter pairing in this company of illustrious songwriters.

Seven Year Ache is the masterpiece album that has been said to have paved the way for Garth Brooks, Shania Train, Shawn Colvin and then some. In Rolling Stone‘s 50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own, Cash “conceived her niche as post-pub-rock and borderline New Wave, at least in the sense of Tom Petty and Steve Forbert, whose material she interprets”. The album was produced by then-husband Rodney Crowell and the title track was Rosanne’s first #1 Country single, crossing over to a Top 25 Pop tune. The album spawned two more #1 Country singles including another self-penned stunner, “Blue Moon With Heartache” and Leroy Preston’s “My Baby Thinks He’s a Train”. This week’s tune earned Cash an ACM Awards nomination for Single Record of the Year, and helped earn her a nod for Album of the Year. Seven Year Ache is both a true classic and a trail blazer all wrapped in one.

Rosanne Cash – When the Master Calls the Roll

This week’s Top Tune is most appropriately one of NPR Music’s 50 Favorite Songs of 2014. With the feel of a classic Celtic ballad, this “five-minute-long historical novel of a song (written by Cash, Rodney Crowell and John Leventhal), transforms the story of a Civil War marriage into a protest against the futility of combat”.–NPR.

“I have ancestors on both sides of the Civil War; a William Cash in the Confederate Army and a William Cash in the Union Army.” says Rosanne Cash from the liner notes to her album, The River & the Thread. “Another ancestor, Mary Ann Cash, was around 20 years old at the beginning of the Civil War and I figured she must have had a sweetheart who was a soldier”.

“Rodney was up for writing a Civil War ballad with me, which I always wanted to do. We got together a couple of times and wrote the rest by email to John’s magnificent melody. Rodney had already written the first eight lines, taken directly from a 19th century personals ad.” You can hear the fantastic results including a choir consisting of Crowell, Amy Helm, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Tony Joe White in, “When the Master Calls the Roll“.

Rosanne returns home this week after a victorious European tour for a special concert on Saturday August 9th at Lincoln Centers’ Damrosch Park. It will be presented by the inaugural Americanafest NYC (a new partnership between Lincoln Center Out of Doors and the 15-year-old Nashville-based Americana Music Association). The show will be streamed live at 6pm local time and hosted by country singer/songwriter and former radio host, Laura Cantrell. Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale plus The Lone Bellow will be the supporting artists. You can click the link HERE to stream live.
