Tift Merritt – Eastern Light

(click song title above to listen)

And still my shadow is waiting for you
like it always used to
Hanging around and looking behind me
so that you can find me
In the eastern light

On this week’s Top Tune, Tift Merritt accompanied by Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, delivers a gorgeous and haunting elegy to a failed relationship. It’s one of our faves on Merritt’s most recent album Stitch of the World which features the best of the best; Jay Bellerose on drums, Jennifer Condos on bass, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, and Marc Ribot on guitar.

“This album will be on many year-end lists come December” – Exclaim.

Tift Merritt – Heartache Is an Uphill Climb

(click song title above to listen)

NPR says of this week’s top tune; “once it gathers steam, the song turns into a strong-willed, AM soul-pop tune that portrays heartache not as a season to be passively endured so much as one to be slowly, strenuously overcome”.

Ya! The tune they’re talking about is a new one by Tift Merritt and to our ears, an instant classic. One of many poignant, hopeful, honest ditties on her new album dropping this Friday January 27th entitled Stitch of the World (Yep Roc Records).

Tift once again has plucked the best supporting cast for the album which includes Marc Ribot and lap-steel specialist Eric Heywood on guitars, drummer extraordinaire Jay Bellerose and the wonderful Jennifer Condos on bass. Iron & Wine‘s Sam Beam serves as co-producer and backup singer on what marks Merritt’s sixth studio release.

Elle describes the song as “material that’s straight out of the Dolly Parton or Tammy Wynette songbook, but Merritt makes it her own.” Could not agree more!

The official Stitch of the World Tour begins Saturday in Amsterdam followed by a heavy dose of UK dates and a full North American Tour through May 16th. Not to be missed! Click HERE for info and tickets.
