Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us

(click song title above to listen)

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’s brilliant 2007 album, Raising Sand won Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards (plus all four other categories it was nominated for) and is closing in on two million copies sold in the U.S. alone. The songs were hand-picked by producer T Bone Burnett including this week’s Top Tune, a stunning version of “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us” written by our very own Sam Phillips.

The tune was recorded by Phillips herself a year later on her eleventh studio album, 2008′s Don’t Do Anything on Nonesuch Records and beautifully covered in Spanish by Gaby Moreno in 2016. It was inspired by Sister Rosetta Tharpe as Sam explains:

“I was using her (Tharpe) to talk about the things that we can’t see that happen all around us – the inspiration, the good things that happen to us all the time, and where do those things from? I think through music and art is how we get to ecstatic experiences. There are other ways too, but I think for us the familiar ways are through music and art”.

We couldn’t agree more!

Sam Phillips – Reflecting Light

(click song title above to listen)

In April 2004, Sam Phillips released the second of what would become a trio of excellent albums for Nonesuch Records, A Boot And A Shoe. It’s an album that was aptly described by the Los Angeles Times as delivering “deft, powerful strokes” and Billboard proclaimed it: “A disc of graceful beauty”.

You may recognize its’ sixth track, the stunning “Reflecting Light” from a now iconic scene in Netflix’s 2016 relaunch of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life just released on DVD and Blu-ray this week! This gem was also featured in the 2009 film and soundtrack to, Crazy Heart. The film earned Jeff Bridges an Academy Award for Best Actor and is one of our all-time faves. Sam sings and plays guitar, T Bone Burnett plays bass, it’s Patrick Warren on piano and pump organ and the great Section Quartet (Eric Gorfain/violin, Daphne Chen/violin, Richard Dodd/cello, Leah Katz/viola) on strings.

Not that I’ve worn out, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon’s never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light
