Sam Phillips – Zero Zero Zero!

Big numbers go by
I close my eyes
I never count a large amount
My lucky number is below one
You never know when you might need a zero

When Sam Phillips and producer T Bone Burnett entered the studio to follow up her hit Grammy nominated Martinis & Bikinis album, they enlisted a bevy of A-list players such as Jon Brion, Jim Keltner, Matt Chamberlain, Don Heffington, Greg Leisz, Jerry Scheff and Marc Ribot, among many others, to craft an original musical soundscape – a retro-futuristic pop collection dubbed “Omnipop.”

Among Omnipop’s often overlooked gems include a co-write with REM (“Slapstick Heart”), and, an enduring favorite, “Zero Zero Zero!” Perhaps “Zero” is channeling the likes of Esquivel and his ilk, we don’t know… what we do know is that this pop nugget puts a big smile on our faces whenever we hear it.

So, on this 20th anniversary week of its’ release, take a peek into what we think Sam Phillips’ space-age bachelor(ette) pad might sound like. You never know when you might need a zero…

Sam Phillips – Holding On To The Earth

(click song title above to listen)

“I have a lot of questions; asking questions is part of any artistic endeavor. But the real challenge is to be brave enough to allow the questions to be unanswerable. It’s that process that inspires me to write”.

Sam Phillips is an artist whose process always inspires us to listen and one who defies any attempts of pigeonholing. It was during the summer of 1988 that Sam would score a Top 30 Modern Rock hit with this week’s tune “Holding On To The Earth”. The song appears on her debut Virgin Records album, The Indescribable Wow . Often described as a modern version of 60s psychedelic rock or acid pop, it was the first time Phillips recorded under her childhood nickname, Sam.

T Bone Burnett‘s production straddles both the past and the present, for all the 1960s nods of the Beach Boys-like “I Can’t Stop Crying” or the Beatlesque “Remorse”, The Indescribable Wow never sounds dated or retro, just timeless”. – Jason Ankeny – Allmusic
