Bob Dylan – The Best is Yet to Come

(click song title above to listen)

Nobel Prize-winner Bob Dylan‘s third foray into tunes previously recorded by Frank Sinatra, Triplicate (4 1/2 Stars Rolling Stone), is a stunning collection of song-craft featuring standards by American masters including Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, and Cy Coleman.

“These are recordings of breathtaking directness and beauty. There is nothing forced, no strain, no desire to put anything over on anybody or make a splash. Songs you may have thought you knew to the final decimal point you may feel you are hearing for the first time, transfigured. Not because of some dazzling new stylization or radically reimagined take on things; nobody here drew a moustache on the Mona Lisa. The singer on these recordings looks directly into the heart of each song, takes the measure of what it is about, and delivers it with such unaffected feeling and maturity and honesty that it can change you in the listening”. Tom Piazza (from the original liner notes). Hear, hear!

Bob Dylan (vocals), Tony Garnier (bass), Charlie Sexton (guitar), Donnie Herron (steel guitar), Dean Parks (guitar), George Receli (drums).

Carmen McRae – The Best Is Yet To Come

(click song title above to listen)

“Blues is to jazz what yeast is to bread…without it, it’s flat.” – Carmen McRae

Carmen backed up that sentiment night after night during a long and illustrious career as one of the most artful singers in the business. It’s on full display in this week’s top tune, the signature Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh-penned classic McRae swings so beautifully on a 1991 tribute album to Sarah Vaughan, her recently deceased friend.

The sessions are backed by the Shirley Horn Trio and would be the final recordings of Carmen’s career. The album is widely considered the perfect swan song for McRae after a run of over 60 albums and a half-century of brilliant live performances, and we couldn’t agree more!

Bob Dylan Sings Cy Coleman

dylan john shearer wide bfb46d4dacac0e52eacd363bd5ef40a5aa013d89 s1500 c85 1024x575 Bob Dylan Sings Cy ColemanHappy Release Day! Columbia Records brings you the latest from Bob Dylan, his first triple album. “Because as Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker and countless others knew, the concise songs of the Songbook era are magical self-renewing energy systems. In the space of just 32 measures, less than a minute, they lay out an idea or narrative, develop it, take it into a different tonality for the new perpective, and return home in a way that makes listeners want to take the ride again” – NPR.

Featuring classics by composers Cy Coleman (“The Best is Yet To Come“), Hoagy Carmichael (“Stardust”), Harold Arlen (“Stormy Weather”), Triplicate moves with great reverence and Dylan sings these at close range and at human scale. Read more HERE!
