Skating Polly – Cosmetic Skull

And I’ll just be your mud rug, my dear.
And I’ll keep writing little headaches for your ears.

When Skating Polly finished their record The Big Fit, they had a goal to make a video for every song on the album. “Cosmetic Skull” rounds out the 12th and final video for the album and it’s been an impressive and inspiring adventure watching each tale take shape! Starting with first pre-album release single “Nothing More Than A Body” in May 2015 (the sneering, eponymous track was written as an existential response to meeting long-time idol Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel), to the L7 anthem-like “Perfume For Now” in February of last year (their first after relocating to Tacoma Washington from Oklahoma) to this week’s Top Tune. The latest video marks their 7th collaboration with director Dave Smith from the album and you can check ‘em all out here:

The Big Fit – video timeline:
Nothing More Than A Body - May 2015 (dir Drake Matney)
Perfume For Now – Feb 2016 (dir Nickolas Rossi)
Pretective Boy – March 2016 (dir Dave Smith)
Hey Sweet – March 2016 (dir Dave Smith)
Stop Digging – April 2016 (dir Dave Smith)
For The View – May 2016 (dir Drake Matney)
Picker of His Words – Aug 2016 (dir Dave Smith)
Across the Caves – Sept 2016 (dir Sofia Due Rosenzweig)
Morning Dew – Nov 2016 (dir Sofia Due Rosenzweig)
Oddie Moore – Jan 2017 (dir Dave Smith)
Arms & Opinions – Feb 2017 (dir Dave Smith)
Cosmetic Skull – March 2017 (dir Dave Smith)

The band has just announced a full spring tour in support of their upcoming EP New Trick (coming April 28 via El Camino Media). We cannot wait to share it, all songs were recorded and co-written with a pair of their musical heroes, Nina Gordon and Louise Post of Veruca Salt! The EP was produced by Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Sunny Day Real Estate) and as Peyton explains “This was the first time we were able to work as a full band and I think it really just opened up this new level for us in the sense that we were able to add other elements and make things sound bigger than they had in the past”. In that spirit the band recently added Kelli Mayo’s brother Kurtis who has joined the band on drums. Dig it!

Skating Polly – Across the Caves

(click song title above to listen)

“There’s no right or wrong way to make art”

Step-sister duo Skating Polly released their fourth album The Big Fit earlier this year, described as “likely to be the most intelligent, honest, and powerful record of 2016″ by Nina Rädel of Abglanz Mag. We like this Nina Rädel.

Abglanz flew to London to see the band live earlier this year and had a chat with them about music videos, songwriting and being role-models. One thing very apparent is the joy and creativity Kelli and Peyton bring to making videos, one for every tune. Check out the latest for one of our favorite jams from the album, Across the Caves, HERE.

The band are currently prepping a full tour and the release of a stupendous collaboration with Nina Gordon and Louise Post of Veruca Salt for early 2017. Meanwhile you can catch them on tour supporting legendary punk band X on their 40th Anniversary Tour November 29 at the Crocodile (Seattle) and December 2nd at Crystal Palace (Portland)!

While still in middle school, Skating Polly recorded an album in their living room and called it Taking Over the World. Here we are just five years later and it seems they could do exactly that!

This week’s top tune is one of our fave’s from their new ‘Ugly Pop’ lp The Big Fit, check out the video HERE.

“This won’t hurt too badly” sings Kelli Mayo, “I’ll just take your skin”.

Skating Polly – Pretective Boy (The Hey Mr. Version)

(click song title above to listen)

Purveyors of blistering alt-punk they describe as “ugly pop”, this week’s top tune from Tacoma-based step sisters Skating Polly is the most unapologetically catchy little jam yet. “Pretective Boy” comes from their brand new 4th lp, The Big Fit which dropped this week!

“It was just an experiment to see if I could write a good song using my loop pedal and it turned into one of my favorite songs we’ve ever recorded” – Kelli Mayo

Today we feature a damn sweet remix by Dan Molad of Lucius, hear the original version and see the excellent official video (directed & edited by Dave Smith) HERE.

You can see Skating Polly live in concert tonight in Minneapolis – 7th St. Entry, 3/31 Chicago – 4/1 Schubas Tavern, 4/1 Lydia House – Louisville, KY, 4/2 Mahall’s – Lakewood, OH, 4/9 Seattle – The Vera Project, 4/23 – Norman, OK – Norman Music Festival.

Also, look for Kelli to make her Dramatic Television Series debut as regular cast member, Berlice Beaman in the upcoming Hulu/Paramount Television coming-of-age thriller, When the Street Lights Go On! Read more about it HERE. CONGRATS KELLI!

Get yourself to the Skating Polly store to order The Big Fit on vinyl, tees, 45s, cds and more.
