Tift Merritt – Bramble Rose

This past Thursday during the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Don Henley gave invited guests a first listen to some of the tracks from his upcoming star-studded solo album, Cass County. Mick Jagger and Miranda Lambert each lend their distinctive vocals to “Bramble Rose”, the lead-off track that Henley told interviewer Beverly Keel that he had been a fan of the song since he had heard Tift Merritt’s version in the early 2000s. We like this man’s taste in music!

Dolly Parton joins him for the other cover on the album, a version of the Louvin Brothers 1955 country hit “When I Stop Dreaming”. The rest of the album’s songs were written by Henley and many were co-written with production partner, Stan Lynch, the original drummer for Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers. The album features additional powerhouse vocalists including Merle Haggard, Lucinda Williams, Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill, and Lee Ann Womack.

“I’m associated with California a lot because of that other band that I play in…” Henley tells Craig Shelburne of Rolling Stone. “but I really and truly was born and raised in Cass Country, Texas. I’m a Southerner and a Texan. I have ancestors in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. So this is a natural progression for me. It’s not me trying to do the ‘Don Henley’ country album’. It’s who I am and where I come from.”

The album will be released on Capitol Records, an official release date has not yet been set but we hear rumors of a mid-September release.

Meanwhile we offer up fellow-Texan and songwriter supreme; Tift Merritt’s original version from her 2002 debut album of the same title. Enjoy!
