“I have a lot of questions; asking questions is part of any artistic endeavor. But the real challenge is to be brave enough to allow the questions to be unanswerable. It’s that process that inspires me to write”.
Sam Phillips is an artist whose process always inspires us to listen and one who defies any attempts of pigeonholing. It was during the summer of 1988 that Sam would score a Top 30 Modern Rock hit with this week’s tune “Holding On To The Earth”. The song appears on her debut Virgin Records album, The Indescribable Wow . Often described as a modern version of 60s psychedelic rock or acid pop, it was the first time Phillips recorded under her childhood nickname, Sam.
“T Bone Burnett‘s production straddles both the past and the present, for all the 1960s nods of the Beach Boys-like “I Can’t Stop Crying” or the Beatlesque “Remorse”, The Indescribable Wow never sounds dated or retro, just timeless”. – Jason Ankeny – Allmusic
