Sam Phillips – Lying

(click song title above to listen)

It was this week back in 2011 when Sam Phillips gifted us with a collection of songs from her stunning year-long subscription series The Long Play. Capping off a particularly fertile period of creativity to her fans, Solid State highlighted 13 of 42 songs she released over the course of five EPs and a full-length album.

This week’s tune is one of our faves of the collection, a stripped down version of “Lying” Sam originally recorded for her 1991 album, Cruel Inventions (and featured Elvis Costello on guitar!).

On Solid State “Phillips makes every word count…doling out images with precision. She sings about compromises, frailty, coping mechanisms, and tiny flaws that define a life. Phillips sounds like she’s rejuvenated – and never better.” – Greg Kot – Chicago Tribune.

Sam Phillips – Where is Love Now

Between 2009 and 2011 Sam PhillipsThe Long Play digital subscription program yielded five incredible ep’s and the full length lp, Cameras in the Sky. This week’s Top Tune comes from the fifth and final ep of the series in 2010, the beautiful Days of the One Night Stands.

The song was first recorded by the great high lonesome-voiced Lubbock native, Jimmie Dale Gilmore on his 1996 album, Braver Newer World (Elektra Records). Produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion on guitars and keyboards, the song found a fitting home with Gilmore’s characteristically spiritual musical settings. Listen in on Jimmie’s version HERE.

Most recently, you can hear a magnificent new interpretation of the song on Grammy-winning artist Nickel Creek‘s brand new album, A Dotted Line on Nonesuch Records. A delicate yet powerful version that gives vocalist Sara Watkins room to breathe. We love all three versions, true artists each and every one.

Sam Phillips – Tell Her What She Wants To Know

For seven seasons, Sam Phillips scored the television show Gilmore Girls, creating the soundtrack that played alongside the lives of the beloved characters on the hit WB show. The show’s soundtrack cd, Our Little Corner of the World: Music From Gilmore Girls, featured a number of Sam’s cues and a new tune, “Tell Her What She Wants To Know.”

Since then, “Tell Her What She Wants To Know,” has been rerecorded from the original version heard on the show. Sam went back and reinterpreted the song, presented here, as part of her ambitious year-long Long Play project. The Long Play – a music and art installation on the web which provided members five EPs and a full-legnth album (along with a smattering of bonus tracks and other exclusive content) – was universally hailed by the press and embraced by fans. ”Phillips has thrown open a virtual door to her creative world,” wrote the LA Times, “inviting in fans over the course of a year to watch and participate as she writes and records a new album.” For the time being, The Long Play remains open for business – allowing any new subscribers full access to all the content created during the Long Play project.
