“Our job as entertainers is to ease some pain. So to begin with, you have to know what and where the pain is”.

‘Mama Cass’ Elliot was often described as the queen of L.A. pop society. Her phenomenal voice helped propel the Mamas & the Papas into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and her home in Laurel Canyon was a popular gathering place for the likes of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Joni Mitchell, and Eric Clapton to name a few.

The Mamas & the Papas released a total of five studio albums and seventeen singles over a four-year period (1965-1968) selling 40 million albums plus 6 Top 10 singles, including classics “California Dreamin” and “Monday, Monday”. The success of the Papa’s cover of the popular standard, “Dream a Little Dream of Me” spurred Elliot’s desire for a solo career and by the end of 1968, the group had split.

Cass guest-hosted for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and was a frequent guest on The Mike Douglas Show, The Andy Williams Show, The Johnny Cash Show and many others. Elliot headlined two weeks of concerts at the London Palladium in July of 1974 and soon after died in her sleep at the age of 32 from heart failure. She passed away in a flat on loan from singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Four years later, the Who’s drummer Keith Moon would die in that same flat also at the age of 32.
