Nanci Adams – I’m Serving Out A Heavy Sentence Loving You

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s top tune comes from the companion CD to the critically-acclaimed new Cy Coleman bio by Andy Propst, You Fascinate Me So: The Life And Times of Cy Coleman from Applause Books (read some recent praise from Masterworks’, Peter Filichia HERE).

The album was produced by Ken Bloom of Harbinger Records and co-released by The Musical Theater Project as part of their Songwriter Showcase Series, a collection of albums that spotlights great songwriters interpreting their own music and lyrics. For the first time on CD, hear Coleman perform 28 songs from his Broadway, Off-Broadway, rare pop songs, and songs from shows that never opened. From the liner notes: “Cy never lost his urge to perform, with this album compiled from demo recordings he made over the years, you can sample his work as both a composer and a pianist-singer”.

“I’m Serving A Heavy Sentence Loving You” is a demo from 1966 with probably one of the best titles of any song in our catalog and a lyric by Floyd Huddleston.

“Pop music was changing profoundly in the 1960s, but Cy adapted without missing a beat, as evidenced not only by the mod sounds in Sweet Charity, but also in this collaboration with Floyd Huddleston, a friend throughout Cy’s life.” says Bloom. “He would ultimately turn to Huddleston’s wife, Nanci Adams, for assitance during the filming of Sweet Charity. She was hired to contract the studio singers who provided vocals during the movie’s opening and closing moments”. Adams, who sings on the demo was also the singing voice of Maid Marian from Disney’s Robin Hood in 1973.

“The album serves as both a soundtrack to Propst’s exemplary new biography and a volume that can stand on its own right from a songwriter who also happened to be a nightclub pro – a virtuosic pianist and coolly conversational singer”. – Joe Marchese, The Second Disc. You can order your copy HERE.
